Whale Watching

Whale Watching in San Diego Blog Author: Calvin Hollingsworth Whale watching in San Diego is a popular and exciting activity, as the city is known for its diverse marine life, including a variety of whales. The best time for whale watching in San Diego is during the annual gray whale migration, which typically occurs from December through April as the whales travel south to the warm waters of Baja California and then back north to Alaska. Here are some tips and information for a successful whale-watching experience in San Diego:   Season: The peak season for gray whale watching in San Diego is typically from mid-December through March, with the highest number of sightings occurring in January and February. However, you can also spot other species like blue whales, humpback whales, and orcas during different times of the year.   Tour Operators: There are several tour operators in San Diego that offer whale-watching tours. Some popular departure points include San Diego Harbor, Mission Bay, and La Jolla. Check with different companies to find one that suits your preferences and schedule. Boat Tours: Whale-watching tours are usually conducted on boats. These boats are designed for comfort and are equipped with knowledgeable naturalists or marine biologists who provide information about the whales and their behavior. Duration: Most whale-watching tours last around 3-4 hours, but some operators offer longer or shorter trips. Be prepared for a few hours on the water.   What to Bring: Make sure to dress in layers, as it can get cold on the water. Sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat are also recommended. Don’t forget your camera or binoculars to get a closer look at the whales.   Reservations: It’s a good idea to make reservations in advance, especially during the peak season, to secure your spot on the tour.   Respect the Wildlife: Remember to follow responsible whale-watching guidelines, such as keeping a safe distance from the animals and not disturbing them. Your tour operator should enforce these rules.   Time of Day: Morning tours are often recommended for calmer waters and better visibility, but there are also afternoon options available. Cost: The cost of a whale-watching tour can vary depending on the operator, the duration of the tour, and the amenities provided. Prices typically range from $30 to $75 per person. Wildlife Diversity: While the focus is often on gray whales during the migration season, San Diego is also known for its diverse marine life. Keep an eye out for dolphins, sea lions, and various seabirds during your tour. Whale watching in San Diego can be a memorable experience, offering the opportunity to see these majestic creatures in their natural habitat. Just be sure to plan ahead and choose a reputable tour operator for the best chance of a successful outing.

Burdened with Glorious Purpose

Developing Purpose In Your Life Blog Author: Calvin Hollingsworth Living a purpose-filled life in today’s day and age may seem impossible, especially when there is so much division, violence, doom and gloom, and hatred in our chaotic world. With all of this noise, we may feel overwhelmed and stressed out beyond our breaking points. It may feel like our lives are impossible to bear. One of the key reasons people become cynical and/or hopeless is because they stress out over things or problems that are beyond their control. The only thing that you can have complete control over is yourself. What you do with your time and how you associate with others, will ultimately determine how you will navigate your life. Focusing on activities that will help you grow and improve as a human being will leave a tremendous impact on your personal life. You will learn how to develop your purpose. There are so many videos on social media that try to motivate you to find your purpose. It doesn’t matter how “feel good” or “motivating” these videos are. Generally speaking, motivation is short-lived. A good example is making New Year’s resolutions. You may start on a clean slate at the start of the new year. You may desire to lose weight, or reduce time on useless activities, etc. The problem is that these so-called resolutions usually die out after several weeks. And you are back to where you were before, feeling unfulfilled. Finding your purpose isn’t motivated by others, it ultimately needs to be you. You call the shots as to how you live your life, nobody else. And that can be empowering if you have that desire. The beauty of developing your purpose is that you are never too old or young to work on it. It knows no age. You can be a young child with aspirations to become an Olympic athlete, or you can be an adult who has survived a life-threatening illness and desire to lose weight and live more healthily. You can be a young adult who wants to become an entrepreneur and make millions. The possibilities are endless. The main thing is you have to have a plan, an attainable plan that will get you to where you want to go. You need to have a clear vision of what you ultimately want. It is great to look towards the future, but you need to live in the present and learn from your past in order to accomplish what it is that you want. I have mentioned this phrase in previous blog posts, but, developing your purpose is a life-long pursuit. It is a marathon, not a sprint. You should never have the mentality of “I made it.” There is no endgame to your life’s purpose. That type of mentality can be detrimental because you will become complacent and gradually revert back to your bad habits. You should constantly be looking into activities that will push your limits and make you even better. You don’t need to be the next Michael Jordan, Tom Brady, or Michael Phelps unless that is what you want. At the end of the day, the more time you invest in yourself, the more confident you will become. Your purpose should be to become your best self. No one, other than yourself, should “motivate” you to live your life. That is entirely up to you. Don’t waste too much time watching YouTube videos on how to develop purpose. Live your life. Do not allow other people to live your life for you. Embrace all that life has to offer you. Both the good times and the bad. Learn from your mistakes. Develop the self-awareness as you seek self-mastery. Have an open mind and seek mentors in your life. Help those in need. Develop a delayed gratification mindset. Live your life. Be like Loki who was “burdened with Glorious Purpose.” Over time, you will look yourself in the mirror and see how far you have come. That right there will be all of the motivation that you will need to live out your purpose.

Being Available to Those in Need

Being Available to Those in Need Blog Author: Calvin Hollingsworth One of the most rewarding feelings in life is being able to help those in need. There is a multitude of benefits to giving service to both the giver and receiver. Seeking out opportunities to serve will bring happiness and joy into your life. Plus, it helps with your overall well-being and can help boost your own mental health.  The wonderful thing about serving others is that it doesn’t matter big or small the action is that you do to make someone’s day a little brighter. Some people think that you have to dedicate a lot of time to doing a service project. While that is great, serving others doesn’t always have to be a grandiose activity. The small and simple things we do behind closed doors and out of the limelight are the types of service that make a more impactful difference to those we serve. One recent experience I have with helping someone is a friend of mine who has a wide variety of health issues including Parkinson’s disease. He is a small business owner who constantly needs help. So, during the pandemic, I was both his business partner and also his personal caregiver when his wife was working. I’ve been helping him for nearly 4 years and he has become one of my best friends. It’s an incredible feeling to be available to him and lighten his burdens.  I know we all are crazy busy wearing multiple hats and we may feel that we don’t have the time, energy, or resources to help others. We don’t need to overcomplicate it. It can be as easy as opening the door for someone, giving a genuine compliment, listening to someone, or spending a little bit of time moving a neighbor that just moved down the street. The key to being available to serve others is to develop a willing and selfless heart. Society nowadays teaches young people to be selfish and narcissistic. It also teaches us that if we do serve others, we deserve or are entitled to accolades or praise. Though it is important to be selfish in some instances in life, more often than not, you need to not think about yourself all of the time if you want to be truly happy. I hate to break it to you, but the world doesn’t always revolve around you. We should want to help others because we want to make a difference instead of having ulterior motives that boost our ego or self-interests. This is what our modern-day society teaches us, but that doesn’t mean it is right.  Look around you. There are people who are really struggling. There are people who are miserable with no desire to change. There is no question that mental health is such a hot topic in this day and age. Some of the reasons why people have intense mental health issues is due to what our society teaches and they feel this debilitating pressure to be someone that they are not. I can’t stress this more, society does not care about you. But that doesn’t mean you don’t have to care about the individuals within our society. Being available to others is multi-faceted. It doesn’t only mean doing service projects or helping out at a local shelter or soup kitchen. It also consists of being mentally, emotionally, and even spiritually available as well. It’s difficult for us to help others if we are emotionally distant or checked out mentally. That will cause more harm than good. It is important to make yourself present when you are with someone and it is as simple as giving a listening ear or giving advice when someone wants it.  The moral of this blog post is to inspire you and me to be more aware of opportunities to make others happy. But I can’t force you to become something that you don’t want to be. That, dear viewer, is up to you. If you want to be truly happy, be more readily available to those in your sphere of influence. And if you struggle with mental health issues, all the more reason to help those around you. Through constant effort and time, you will develop coping skills that will help you to better deal with your issues. Who knows, maybe helping someone will be an opportunity for the person you are with to help and inspire you. Maybe one day your good deeds will reciprocate back to you? That’s the beauty of helping others!

Boosting Your Mental Health Through Exercise

Boosting Your Mental Health Through Physical Exercise Blog Post Author: Calvin Hollingsworth Mental Health has received quite the buzz in recent years. There are many ways we can improve our overall mental and emotional well-being.  I have mentioned this in previous blog posts on various things we can do to be mentally and emotionally healthier. This post will focus on what consistent physical exercise can do to improve yourself mentally and emotionally. Exercise in any form, helps the brain release endorphins that help improve your mood, thus improving your overall mental health. The best example I can give to you is what exercise has done for me in my life. I have struggled with depression most of my adult life. My depression led to a lack of ambition, isolating myself from others, and being deep in negative thoughts of self-loathing and mental anguish. I ate food that wasn’t great for me, which led to me gaining a lot of weight and being obese for most of my life. Shortly after graduating from college, I had a goal to join the Navy. I busted my butt with the help of loved ones. Over time and much sacrifice, I lost nearly 60 pounds. To make a very long story short, a career in the Navy never worked out due to medical issues. Despite being unable to join, I still decided I wanted to continue my trajectory of healthy living instead of reverting to gaining the weight I worked so hard to lose. Doing aerobic and anaerobic exercise, while being more active throughout the day has been able to help me to keep my depression and lack of motivation at bay. Though some days are better than others, through my consistency at exercising, I have been able to be more happy and feel a great sense of accomplishment having a solid workout was the highlight of my day because I was able to conquer my inner demons that day. My depression doesn’t last as long when I exercise. We all go through hardships in our lives that demand so much of our time, energy, or stress which can make life too much for us to bear. This leads to many people suffering from imbalance in their lives. Though exercise is not the cure-all for all mental issues, it is one of the greatest things for you to do to improve your health both physically and mentally. You will be able to have more energy throughout your day which will help you to be more productive. Who doesn’t want to be more productive? As I have stressed in many previous blog posts, consistency is key to success. It’s human nature to want to take the easy way out in life. If you want to grow and improve, you need to meet adversity head-on and muster the strength to overcome that said adversity. It’s hard to exercise, that is the point. The point is to push yourself past your limits by developing an unyielding mindset that you can accomplish anything you set yourself to do. Again, all it takes is consistency and self-discipline. Before you know it, you will be in the best physical and mental shape of your life and you will want to conquer the world!
